Ahmad Zakii is a celebrated contemporary artist whose diverse artistic mediums and figurative representation has garnered critical acclaim locally and internationally. He is best known for his hyperrealistic, large-scale charcoal drawings. Born in Johor Bahru in 1955 and a School of Art and Design, MARA Institute of Technology Malaysia alum, Ahmad Zakii’s art explores the depths of human emotion, identity, and mortality, showcasing a remarkable attention to detail. Recent exhibitions have provided platforms for Anwar to display his diverse talents and ongoing exploration of the human condition.
In 2023, he captivated audiences and critics alike with his solo exhibition, Reflections of Existence, at the National Art Gallery in Kuala Lumpur. Alongside solo exhibitions, Anwar's works frequently feature in group exhibitions worldwide, underscoring his influence and significance within contemporary art circles. His work has been sold in auction at Christie’s and exhibited internationally in New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Manila.
Through his art, Anwar invites viewers to ponder their own existence while exploring the complexities of the human psyche, be it theological, psychological and even cosmological. He is also an activist supporting various causes including those involving women’s rights and his local community.
