HIJJAS KASTURI

The Father of Modern Malaysian Architecture

Hijjas bin Kasturi, born on September 26, 1936, in Singapore, is a celebrated Malaysian architect known for his significant contributions to the architectural landscape of Southeast Asia. Often referred to as the "Father of Modern Malaysian Architecture," Hijjas Kasturi has been a pioneering force in shaping the country's architectural identity.

Hijjas Kasturi's journey in architecture began with his education at Raffles Institution in Singapore. He was awarded a scholarship by the Australian Government to study architecture at the University of Adelaide, and he later graduated from the University of Melbourne. His early career saw him working as a draughtsman and architect in both Singapore and Australia, where he gained valuable experience in urban planning and design.

In 1967, Hijjas Kasturi moved to Malaysia and played a pivotal role in establishing the first professional degree program in architecture at the MARA Institute of Technology (now Universiti Teknologi MARA). He served as the founding head of the School of Art and Architecture and was the master planner for the ITM Complex in Shah Alam.

In 1977, Hijjas Kasturi founded his own architectural practice, Hijjas Kasturi Associates Sdn Bhd (HKAS). Under his leadership, the firm has been responsible for some of the most iconic buildings in Malaysia, including the Menara Maybank, Tabung Haji Building, and Telekom Tower. His designs are characterized by a blend of modernism and cultural identity, reflecting Malaysia's rich heritage and contemporary aspirations.

Hijjas Kasturi's contributions to architecture have earned him numerous accolades and recognition. He has been awarded the Malaysian Institute of Architects Gold Medal, the Tokyo Creation Award, and the ASEAN Award, among others. Despite officially retiring, Hijjas continues to be actively involved in the architectural community, guest-lecturing and consulting on various projects.

Beyond his professional achievements, Hijjas Kasturi is also known for his commitment to nurturing young talent and promoting environmental conservation. Together with his wife, Angela Longworth, he established an artist residency program at their property, Rimbun Dahan, which hosts artists, writers, and researchers from around the world.

Hijjas Kasturi's legacy is one of innovation, dedication, and a deep passion for architecture. His work has not only transformed the skyline of Malaysia but has also inspired generations of architects to pursue excellence and creativity in their designs.
