Sheila Majid

Sheila Majid, born Shaheila Binti Abdul Majid on 3 January 1965 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, is one of the celebrated figures in the Malaysian music industry. With a career spanning four decades, she is renowned for introducing jazz-infused pop to mainstream Malaysian audiences and for her international recognition across Southeast Asia and beyond.

Sheila was the youngest of eight siblings in a culturally diverse family with Malay, Javanese and Mandailing heritage. Raised in Kuala Lumpur, she trained in classical piano and developed a love for music that would eventually shape her career. Her talent was discovered by producer Roslan Aziz, leading to the release of her debut album Dimensi Baru in 1985, which introduced a fresh, modern sound to the Malaysian airwaves.

Her breakthrough came with her second album, Emosi (1986), which featured the enduring hit Sinaran. With this album, Sheila introduced a unique blend of pop, jazz, and R&B to local audiences — at a time when the genre was relatively unknown in Malaysia. Her voice, musicality, and stylish stage presence helped her gain popularity not only at home but also in Indonesia, where she became the first non-Indonesian to win Best Female Artist at the BASF Awards in 1987. Two years later, she represented Malaysia at the Tokyo Music Festival and the International Star Search in the United States, where she won Best Female Vocalist, solidifying her position on the global stage.

Her critically acclaimed 1990 album Lagenda, a tribute to the legendary P. Ramlee, further elevated her status as a cultural icon. In 1996, Sheila became the first Malaysian artist to perform at London's prestigious West End, holding a solo concert at a Royalty Theatre, followed by performances at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club.

Throughout her career, Sheila has performed in major concerts and venues, including Stadium Negara, Istana Budaya, and the Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS. Her later works, including Warna (1996), Ku Mohon (2000), and Boneka (2017), continued to demonstrate her musical evolution and vocal maturity.

In recognition of her contributions to the arts, Sheila was awarded the Darjah Indera Mahkota Pahang (D.I.M.P) in 2008, granting her the honorific title Dato'. She has also received multiple Anugerah Industri Muzik (AIM) awards, including Best Pop Album, Best Female Vocal Performance, and Song of the Year. In 2021, she was named one of Asia's Most Influential by Tatler Asia.
